As part of our continuing efforts to ensure fair matches and an enjoyable ladder system, we’ve identified and recently addressed three notable issues through hotfixes:. Improved Matchmaking for Teams While the matchmaking system as a whole is looking very strong, one area we identified for improvement was matchmaking for arranged teams that were still in placement matches. We found these first few matches for arranged teams were giving them an unfair advantage against their opponents.
Since so many new arranged teams were being created every day, this was resulting in a noticeable amount of imbalanced matches for team games.

Let’s talk about Starcraft 2 ‘s ranking system, specifically the bonus pool system, the focus on ranked matches, and the division system. Before we get into all that, I’ll give some background info from three years ago when I talked with Rob Pardo VP of Game Design at Blizzard about me possibly taking on the role of ranking-and-tournament systems designer at Blizzard. My first response was that this is easy because it’s already a solved problem: Microsoft solved it with what they call TrueSkill. Also, TrueSkill uses a bell curve rather than a single point when referring to a player’s skill level.
As the system gets more information about the player, it becomes more “certain” that the skill ranking is accurate, and that player’s personal bell curve shrinks. More important than any of those details though, is Microsoft’s philosophy about rankings. Valve update matchmaking for Dota 2
The Role Queue system is designed to help take the edge off this process, ultimately leading to matches that feel fairer and more fun, where players are in roles that they want to be in. While Blizzard has revisited real-time strategy once since with Warcraft III –and plenty of other developers have refined and evolved the genre in their own ways–the elegant three-way balance of the original StarCraft has remained an institution, so close to perfection that more than a decade later it’s still famously practiced as a national pastime in some parts of the world.
That’s why StarCraft II hews to the same factions and gameplay formula as its vaunted predecessor, and why Blizzard couldn’t, and shouldn’t, have changed the fundamental core of what this game is.
